USB-UIRT / MCE IR Remote Control Software for your HTPC - How to use

Getting started with the Remote Control software is easy, and just requires these simple steps

... just make sure you've got an USB-Uirt device hooked up to your computer and the drivers correctly installed.

Step 1:  "Learn" and manage your remote codes

Using the Remote Control Manager, learn the IR-codes you intend to use from your remotes and organize them into categories for easier management.  You can also just paste your codes in, if you've already got them on your computer (PRONTO format).

Choose file -> save to save your codes to a command file (.rcf)

Step 2:  Design your remote control layout

Using the Remote Control GUI designer, load the .rcf file you created in step 1. Add buttons for each command you intend to use. Drag the buttons around, resize them, and change their appearance until you are happy with your design.  Your design can have a background image and you can even put images on the buttons.  That enables you to emulate the true layout of your physical remote!

Choose file -> save to save your design to a layout file (.rcl)

Step 3:  Start using your design to control your equipment!

Start the Remote Control GUI application and load your design. Choose your control mode using the settings menu. If the USB-UIRT is directly connected to the computer running the Remote Control GUI, simply choose Control mode -> Direct from the Settings menu. If your IR-device is connected to another computer on your network, then you must start the Remote Control Server on that machine, and then select Control mode -> Via network from the Settings menu. Configure the host name of the server machine and port number and you are good to go.

The Remote Control GUI application remembers the last design used, so it will automatically open the last loaded design on each startup.

If you launch the Remote Control HTTP server on the machine which has the IR-device connected to it, you can even use your favorite web-browser to load your design and control your equipment.  Simply point your browser to the IP-address/host-name and port number of the server machine.
